(5 November 2013) - GOG.com, the DRM-free digital distributor of the best games in history for PC and Mac has launched its first-ever charity action on the service, running from now until 12 November 2013 at 13:59 GMT. After recently celebrating 5 years in business, after building one of the largest hardcore gaming communities on the 'Net, and after all of the success and growth it has achieved the company has decided it is time to give back. Gamers can pick 3 or more games and donate $5 or more to one of three charities on GOG.com: the WWF (http://j.mp/GOG_WWF_Charity), Worldbuilders (http://j.mp/GOG_Worldbuilders_Charity), and Gaming for Good (http://j.mp/GOG_and_Athene).
With games like FTL: Faster Than Light, The Whispered World, and Waking Mars as part of the action, the games are certainly titles to appeal to gamers of all types, but the fact that GOG.com is spending money of their own to make sure that 100% of every donation goes straight to charity is also a big deal. In order to make sure that a $5 donation doesn't end up becoming a $5 donation minus credit card fees, VAT, and other expenses, the independent digital distributor will be spending nearly $0.25 on every dollar raised to make sure that every $5 donation equals $5.00 given to charity.
WWF, of course, is one of the largest and best known ecological charities in the world, but the other two charities involved in this fundraiser are perhaps less well known. Worldbuilders is a charity that raises funds in support of Heifer International-an international charity dedicated to eradicating poverty and hunger around the world-and is run by New-York Times Bestselling author Patrick Rothfuss (The Name of the Wind, and Wise Man's Fear). Gaming for Good is run by YouTube gaming personality Athene, and has already successfully raised more than 6 million dollars for Save the Children, an international charity that serves impoverished, marginalized and vulnerable children and families in nearly 120 countries.
The developers of the games in this charity fundraiser (Introversion (Darwinia), Subset Games (FTL: Faster Than Light), Tiger Style Games (Waking Mars), Amanita Design (Botanicula), Instant Kingdom (Driftmoon), Northway Games (Incredipede), Digital Game Factory (Creatures: Village), Might & Delight (Pid), Daedalic (The Whispered World), and Oddworld (Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee)) are all supporting these three charities as well, as they're receiving no royalties for the games that are being sold as part of the fundraiser.
GOG.com is a store that sells games for download. With more than 600 games in its catalog and 150+ partners, they have games from every big studio you’ve ever heard of—Interplay, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts—and games from indie studios that produce brilliant games in obscurity. Formerly known as Good Old Games, GOG.com has games from as far back as 1981 and as recently as yesterday. With the best games in history for PC and Mac, GOG.com has grown to be the #2 independent digital distributor on the ‘Net.
WWF is one of the world's largest and most respected independent conservation organizations, with over 5 million supporters and a global network active in over 100 countries. WWF's mission is to stop the degradation of the Earth's natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature, by conserving the world's biological diversity, ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable, and promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.
Worldbuilders is a charity run by New York Times Bestselling author Patrick Rothfuss in support of international poverty aid charity Heifer International. Regularly pulling in support from an all-star cast of writers, geek icons, and musicians, Worldbuilders has raised millions for charity since 2008, giving readers and fans of fantasy a chance to help participate in making the world a better place while getting something fun for their efforts.
