SpeedTree® Delivers Trees to Microsoft's Virtual Earth 3D
Company: IDV
COLUMBIA, SC – SpeedTree® is helping deliver realistic trees and plants to a growing number of areas in Virtual Earth 3D, the three-dimensional online world created by Microsoft Corp.

Cities currently featuring SpeedTree include Denver and Las Vegas, where users of Virtual Earth 3D get to enjoy palms, broadleaves and other SpeedTree flora as they navigate detailed street maps and fly among 3D buildings.

Microsoft is continuing to add 3D details to select areas in the U.S. and other nations. To date, about 200 cities in the US, Western Europe, and Japan may be viewed through the unique, 3D view available in Virtual Earth 3D. Six of the US cities (Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, Miami, Tampa) use tree models generated by SpeedTreeCAD. The application, available for free to anyone who wants to see the world virtually, has also been licensed by numerous businesses and organizations for use as an online store locator, an interactive tour guide, a 3D real estate directory and even a tool for municipal planning and public safety.

Virtual Earth 3D is one of many Microsoft projects featuring SpeedTree. Microsoft signed a multiple-title deal with IDV in 2007 that brought SpeedTreeRT into best selling games like the Project Gotham Racing series and other, as-yet-unannounced projects for Games for Windows and Xbox 360.

SpeedTreeRT, winner of the 2005 Front Line Award for middleware, delivers highly realistic trees and plants, with adjustable wind effects, user-configurable and seamless LOD transitions, and an included library of hundreds of tree, plant and marine models representing more than 200 core species. SpeedTreeRT includes SpeedTreeCAD, a Windows application used to create and edit animated trees in real-time.

Interactive Data Visualization, Inc.
