Lords Online is a browser-based strategy game based on medieval territorial conflict. Recently its chief designer (known as Kaiser) released a developer’s journal talking about what’s gone into the game’s development. He posted the following comments about the game and some of the cool features in the works.
During the initial phase of game development, we wanted to keep in mind that browser-based games have many advantages, such as no required download, being able to play online no matter where you are, and other strong points, but such games also often fall short of what players want. Our challenge was to find ways to let players experience the fun of gaming while retaining the convenience of a web-based interface.
One of our primary design decisions was to make Lords Online a strategic war game. Players will start out as common castle owners and grow to become powerful rulers.
Lords Online is the next generation of gaming. A classic SLG combines a multiplayer environment with a relatively stable path toward advancement, including administration, resource gathering and allocation, building up military might, and city expansion. That design is traditional and sensible, but also kind of boring. To differentiate Lords Online from other SLG games, we added many RPG elements to provide more choices for players. In particular, player-controlled combat gives players a truly memorable experience that will keep them coming back for more.
Players will never know what happens next as they progress along their adventures. We’ve designed many kinds of monsters that live on the outskirts of the world, like vampires, the Cerberus, the three-headed dog in Greek mythology, and more. These monsters may be the oracles to help you learn how to upgrade. Some surprising treasures can drop during an adventure, including basic resources or superior weapons. Adding RPG elements has made our game more colorful, and helps to emphasize our goal of building a truly epic strategic war game.
We have moved to the final design phase, so we’re looking forward to releasing more information as we near completion. Stay tuned!
