Now that consumers have started to get their hands on the industry’s most advanced entertainment console, the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) system, Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced a key firmware update to the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system that enables the two platforms to work together. With the latest upgrade (version 3.00), consumers can now stream multimedia content, including videos, photos, and music, from their PS3 system (60GB configuration) to their PSP system. In addition, the PSP system now has a software emulator so you can play classic PlayStation® (PS one™) software titles, which will be available soon for download from the PLAYSTATION®Store via the PS3.
Remote Play
The PS3 system’s navigation interface, the XMB™ (Xross Media Bar), features a Network icon, and on the 60GB configuration you can select the “Remote Play†feature for streaming media content wirelessly (via Wi-Fi) from the console’s hard drive to a PSP system. In addition, you can play standard audio CDs, as well as access PS3 features like the Internet browser, Friends list, and Messaging. When playing content, the PSP supports options offered by the PS3, including slideshows for photos and visualizers for music. Initially, you can playback content when the two systems are within close proximity in your own home. In the future, consumers will be able to access their PS3 videos, photos, and music from an Internet hotspot.
PS one downloadable games
PSP owners nostalgic for the games they grew up with, as well as those who are new to the PlayStation family, will be able to download and play select PS one games through a new software emulator that’s included with the new firmware update. Downloading games is as simple as a few taps on the PS3 controller. First, the PSP and PS3 systems must be connected via a USB cable. Consumers then access the PLAYSTATION®Store through the Network icon on the PS3 system’s XMB. Once there, they can purchase PS one titles, ranging in price from $5.99 to $10.99, and download them directly to their PSP system’s Memory Stick Duo™. Initial files sizes will range from about 140MB to 550MB. PS one titles will be available through the PLAYSTATION®Store in the coming weeks, and additional first and third-party games will be added on an ongoing basis.
RSS timer
The 3.0 firmware upgrade also includes a new timer setting for automatically downloading content to the PSP from Really Simple Syndication (RSS) channels. This feature makes it easer than ever to keep up with your favorite RSS video and audio feeds. To activate the setting, you simply turn on the Wi-Fi switch and put the system in sleep mode before the time you select.
The PSP 3.0 firmware update which includes the Remote Play feature, PS one software emulator and other features can be wirelessly downloaded directly to a PSP system using a Wi-Fi connection; downloaded to a PC from http://www.us.playstation.com/psp and transferred to a PSP system through a USB cable; or installed using upcoming UMDâ„¢ software.
