North America Retail Box ArtUnited Kingdom Retail Box ArtWith a title like Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO this can be nothing more or less than an old-school two-dimensional Capcom beat-'em-up. Love it or hate it, this is just the ticket for hardcore fighting fans. And boy, is this hardcore. Capcom are the company responsible for Street Fighter and are the most famous of the Japanese developers of 2D beat-'em-ups. SNK, on the other hand, are so old school they went bust in 2001. Anyone that's ever played a beat-'em-up will know the basic rules of the genre--hit your opponent until they fall down--but CvS2 adds a dojo of additional options that will keep fans happy for months. There are six different fighting styles (or grooves), a terribly complex ratio system for choosing a team of up to three fighters (although oddly there's no tag option), and a veritable feast of minor options and game modes.Basically, if you like this sort of thing, you'll absolutely love Capcom vs SNK 2 EO--except that there's a rather big "but" coming up. As you may have noticed the GameCube's controller isn't really very well suited to this sort of game, and so Capcom have created a rather odd alternative control system that puts all the special moves within easy reach on the C-stick. Hardcore fans are likely to upchuck at the very thought, but it is relatively playable in a shallow Mortal Kombat kind of way. The normal six button control method is still included though, but it really only works if you can use a proper arcade-style joystick with it. --David Jenkins
