Ping Pong is a beloved favorite of many people. Sadly, Pocket Ping Pong 2005 won’t be. PPP2005 takes a marketing masterpiece and trashes it. It attempts to use the old ‘sex sells’ adage, but falls flat on its face. The graphics don’t really depict the bikini-clad chicks in the right way; instead they look like tiny, jaggy stick figures. The biggest problem with the game is the fact that you can’t see a paddle, you have no idea where you’re aiming or even if you are going to hit the ball.

The objective is simple and so are the controls. As with most table tennis games, using the arrow keys along with the swing button will make the ball go in that direction and sometimes make it go faster and wilder. Unfortunately, because there’s no visible paddle, it’s difficult to judge where exactly you’re aiming.

The game offers different modes of play, but mostly you’ll be sticking with the Arcade mode since that offers the most entertainment. The others are Target Practice, Return Fire, and Nonstop Rally. Target Practice and Return Fire both have three different difficulty levels and aren’t all that fun. Nonstop Rally lets you see how long you can keep the ball going without messing up.

The voices and sounds are a mixed bag. The voices are just plain stupid and mostly inaudible, and the music just fills in the gap between volleys. After each point the girls make a statement of some sort which gets annoying after a while, especially when you’re losing.

You can set the game on easy or hard, and adjust the amount of points needed to win a match. From there you can select one of the two available girls (four are locked) to play against your opponent. Each girl has a special skill, such as a drop shot or spin shot, that can be used to get an advantage on your opponent.

The controls are simple but sometimes unresponsive. For example, if you want to try to hit the ball hard and to the corner, it may end up going up in the air and in the center. Also it’s difficult to tell how exactly to do your special shot and when you can do it. It seems the other girl always pulls her special shot off and due to the lack of a paddle, it’s hard to gauge where you should be to hit it back.

Sadly, this game just isn’t fun. There is little substance in all areas and unless you’re a huge Gizmondo fan you should avoid this title. Ping Pong is a great game, but this game fails to provide it due to the concentration on the bikini chicks.
