Mojang announced today a new map format for Minecraft to prepare for modding, especially to allow for more block types, but also to improve other areas of the game (such as map height). Maximum build height has been increased to 256 (was 128), empty sections of the world are not loaded into memory, and block ids have been increased to 4096 (was 256) by adding a 4 bit data layer (similar to how meta data is stored). In addition, block ordering have been changed from x/z/y to y/z/x in order to improve compression, and packets for sending chunks have been updated (a full 128-high chunk is smaller than the old format, and a chunk with lots of empty space is much smaller). The files of the current format (“McRegion”) will remain in your save folder, if you need to restore them for some reason. Visit this page for more details.

Resistance: Burning Skies, a new Resistance game, this time developed for PlayStation Vita, will be launched in North America on May 29 and in Europe on May 30th. Set in a tale of survival during the August 1951 Chimeran invasion of the East Coast, you take control of Tom Riley, an everyday firefighter from New Jersey who is thrown headfirst into the teeth of the Chimeran war machine, forcing him to redefine his notions of duty and heroism.

Riot Games has released a new movie for League of Legends, an online multiplayer session-based game in which rival teams compete against one another for victory on highly stylized battlefields and landscapes. Nautilus is a gigantic new addition to the League of Legends who specializes in mobility, initiating fights, disruption, and becoming a nightmare of damage output if ignored.

During a Q&A session about Max Payne 3, Rockstar Games revealed that they are considering a L.A. Noire sequel. "While there won’t be any more DLC or additional content for the current release of L.A. Noire (we’re all too busy working on Max Payne 3, GTAV and other games to come), don't count out the possibility of a new game in the L.A. Noire franchise in the future. Valve has announced that a new patch for Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, the latest installment in the series developed exclusively for PC, is now available on Steam. The patch fixes some doors still not being open after loading a saved game that was created in command mode. In addition, Killcam option is saved globally, not in savegame (check full story for changelog). The demo is locally mirrored here.

Mobile games publisher and developer GAMEVIL sent over a press release announcing that ZENONIA, the newest installment of the ZENONIA role-playing game series, which has reached 16 million cumulative downloads worldwide, is now available for free on the Android Market. For the first time, the game has been optimized to take advantage of HD displays in the latest Android devices. In addition, the game features new gameplay mechanics such as transformations, beast summons and touchscreen-gesture combat combos. ZENONIA 4's Player vs. Player arenas now include new 2-on-2 battles and a mercenary-for-hire system. Fatshark sent us several more screenshots from Krater, a post-apocalyptic RPG set to be available later this year exclusively for PC. Krater takes place in a lush post-apocalyptic game world, a gigantic impact crater where cities and even nations have has been built on the aftermath of a bomb. One of your main goal as a player is to build your team and and try to get as deep as you can into the underside of the Krater. This will eventually become a dungeon crawler with an almost indefinite number of levels. Krater combines the combat mechanics of action-RPGs with the top-down tactics of the classic old-school games such as Syndicate and X-COM.
