Whirlwind of Vietnam: UH-1
On March, 8, 1965 first troops of the US Marine Corps landed on the territory of Southern Vietnam. It was the beginning of a new confrontation between Saigon government and The Liberation Army of Vietnam. American troops used in this war not only new weapons but a new battlefield postures. One of the most noticeable changes of US Forces in conducting of the battle was the all-round usage of military helicopters for transportation of troops, frights and also for fire suppression in landing zones. The campaign in Vietnam became the first war in which helicopters played a great role. Even now the image of the American helicopter Huey is one of the strongest associations with military operation in Indo-China. The legendary Huey participates in every reconstruction of the affairs of that time whether it is a movie, a book or a computer game.
“Whirlwind of Vietnam: UH-1” is a new helicopter sim that depicts the most famous episodes of the war in a movie-style way. The main events of the game are well-known to the audience due to famous books and movies dedicated to the War such as We Were Soldiers, Apocalypse Now, Hamburger Hill and many others. The main hero of the game is Douglas Quaid, a pilot of the US Air Cavalry. “Whirlwind of Vietnam: UH-1” is not only the story of Douglas Quaid but the story of duty, courage and friendship of soldiers in this war. The battlefield of Vietnam became final for above a million of them.
The game depicts the operation of the American forces in the Ia Drang river-valley in November, 1965 as seen by the main hero’s eyes. It was the first operation against the army of the Northern Vietnam at heart of which the helicopters were awarding honors and confidence.
The player will attain several combat missions steering the legendary UH-1B presented as a gunship featuring maximum manoeuverability and fire power. The goals are not reduced to destroying the enemy, but demand the correct infantry support and the choice of higher-priority targets.
In conducting a mission the player can choose between different aircrew members. It can be one of the pilots as well as one of the gunners, each of them having their own features and responsibilities for different tasks on board.
The game features all the major weapons and military equipment of that period, both air and land – from firearms, grenade launchers and artillery to planes and vehicles on either side of the conflict. Among them there are piston-engined attack aircrafts Skyraider, transport helicopters UH-1D and CH-47D, military patrol crafts, freight and passenger tactical vehicles. And of course, the main focus is on reconstruction of real historical events.
The game is flexible and has a lot of settings which allow varied flight behavior for the helicopter from realistic to arcade. This makes the game interesting for both hardcore gamers and casual players.
