Serdic
"Those are my true feelings, stripped bare of any and all lies."
The main character
Formerly Prince Serdic's body double, the identically named Serdic took his place permanently when the prince was killed during Grand Meir's invasion. The crown prince passed the holy blade to him and asked him to fufill his dying wishes. Serdic is now on a quest to reclaim Bretwalde, but he must take care not to let his allies know that he is not the real Serdic.
Marie
"If there's even a slight chance of saving people, our choice is clear, isn't it?"
Prince Serdic's younger sister by blood, she has been living in a Veronan monastery. She is soft-spoken, but has ferocious inner strength and cares deeply for her older brother.
Kay
"Just leave the attack to me! Charge!"
A young knight of Bretwalde.
A young Bretwalde knight who fled the kingdom alongside Serdic. He is passionate and eager, and liable to rush in unthinking. He fights on horseback, allowing him to use a two-handed spear. His usual partner in battle is Margus.
Margus
"Kay! Don't be so hasty!"
A heavy infantryman of Bretwalde who fled the kingdom alongside Serdic. He often has to dissuade Kay from rushing into things. His rough exterior belies his easygoing demeanor and encyclopedic knowledge of the kingdom. He never passes up any opportunity to strike up a conversation with a beautiful woman.
Gauss
"It seems I couldn't put war behind me after all."
Emperor of Grand Meir and commander of the Imperial Army's First Division, the Griffons. He had reservations about invading Bretwalde, but...
Matthias
"Philosophical issues are one thing, but don't bring them to the battlefield."
One of the Grands of Grand Meir, he is in command of the Second Division, the Gold Lions. He is a veteran general who fought by Gauss's side long before the Empire was established.
Clotho
"It's what they get for being weak. It's the same reason you're all going to die here, too."
One of the Grands of the Grand Meir Empire, she is in command of the Third Division, the Red Lions. She was originally a mountain bandit, and the Red Lions to this day are an unorthodox band of soldiers.
Ernest
"Why is everyone around me skilled only at getting on my nerves..."
One of the Grands of the Grand Meir Empire, he is in command of the Fourth Division, the Green Lions. He is vain, egotistical, and not particularly wise.
Alberich
"I'm a soldier. If those were my orders, I'd carry them out."
One of the Grands of the Grand Meir Empire, he is in command of the Fifth Division, the Black Lions. Though he is the youngest of the Grands, his power is astonishing.
Ansom
"It would be irresponsible of me to die here. Given the choice, I'd rather live and be miserable."
The son of Emir Darsin, he is popular with all of Shalem's tribes, and is a likely candidate to take charge of the Federation someday. Once the Empire began its invasion, he decided to journey with his old friend Serdic.
Owl
"Fine, okay. Can't we get along, bro?"
Head of the Wise Bandits, who are based out of Mount Gareh. He claims to be a "gentleman thief," and he forbids his gang from vicious or cruel behavior. He seems to dislike the sea, due to some sort of trauma.
Sasha
"As long as you are safe, Young Master, my own well-being is irrelevant."
A swordswoman of the Shalem Federation who is constantly at Ansom's side to guard his life. She is secretly in love with him... though it isn't much of a secret.
Mephreyu
"I doubt you know what it is to be oppressed."
Court wizard to the Kingdom of Bretwalde. He is a member of the Order of Anrah, and lost friends and relatives to an inquisition conducted by Verona and Bretwalde. He schemes to obtain the power of the Darkness to enact his revenge.
Galahad
"Though I do wish she'd call me "big brother"... It would make me so happy."
A priest in the Order of Anrah. Despite his station, he's a dirty old man who's as lust-crazed as any man half his age. He gets along well with Igraine, who sees him as a grandfather figure.
Igraine
"Serdic, if you'd only listen to what I tell you..."
A witch of the Order of Anrah. She becomes attached to Serdic and joins the Bretwalde army. Though a young girl, she sometimes acts like Serdic's big sister, and she is one of the few who knows his secrets.
Selmer
"We cannot allow this obscenity to exist."
An Ice warlock from Almeria. He is mature for his age, and intensely devoted to his studies. He joins the Bretwalde army under the order of his master, Arios.
Elmer
"Yet the Ark hasn't made its move. Are they stupid?"
Selmer's younger twin brother. Frustrated with the Ark, he joins Grand Meir at Ernest's invitation. He is rude and abrasive, but more polite when it comes to his master, Arios.
Arios
"Hmm, it seems things have gotten lively around here... Did something happen?"
A Fire warlock from Almeria. He is head of the Ark's Sixth Research Laboratory, and mentor to Selmer and Elmer. He has a vast knowledge of all things magical, but tends to get caught up in research for its own sake. He has almost no interests other than magic.
Aegil
"If I say that snow is black, it's black. What will it be? A burning at the stake, or public humiliation?"
Pope of the Divine Nation of Verona and the Church of Valen. She handles her religious duties gracefully at only fourteen years old, though she still sometimes acts her age.
Yumiluna
"Oh, yes! Yes, of course... I remember your name very well..."
A priestess in the Divine Nation of Verona. Though she is one of the Pope's trusted acolytes, she has the fatal flaw of being unable to remember anyone's name. Some mutter that she does this on purpose...
Simon
"If I could be so bold as to ask a boon of the Princess... Allow me to serve as your knight until the war's end."
A temple knight in the Divine Nation of Verona. He is kind and honest, and often spoke with Marie when she stayed in Verona. He fought hard to protect Aegil from Uther's insurrection.
Uther
"Hmph. Pray all you like, but help will never come."
A priest in the Divine Nation of Verona. Convinced that the Church of Valen's stance on the Order of Anrah is too mild, he leads a group of temple knights in revolt.
Alhambra
"Enough with this "monster" business! You think I look like this because I want to!?"
One of the rare beastmen who live in Bravord's deserts. She believes that her bestial form is due to a curse, and journeys to find a cure for it. She's usually easygoing, but can't stand it when people talk about her appearance.
Cotton
"Here I go!"
A selfish, irresponsible, happy-go-lucky witch. Her full name is Nata de Cotton, and she came to Bravord looking for Willow, her favorite delicacy. Somewhere along the way, however, she hit her head and lost her memory.
Rukia
"Who cares what happens, as long as I can make money off it?"
A tomboy thief who steals for the sake of others, rather than herself. She encounters the Bretwalde army when she sneaks into the Imperial Army's base. She has a strong fascination with the holy blade Spanta, and seems set on acquiring it.
Alicia
"But it's a relief to hear you say it like that. Now I can face you as an enemy."
Ruler of the city of Cale in the Central Plains. Kay and Margus, also from Cale, are like brothers to her. The threat of invasion from Grand Meir looms over her, in her inherited role as the head of her city. To keep Cale's citizens alive, she pledged allegiance to Grand Meir, which puts her against the Bretwalde army.
