Eidos licenses film rights to 'Fear Effect'
LOS ANGELES, Feb 3 (Reuters) - British video game publisher Eidos Plc (London:EID.L - News) has licensed rights to its game "Fear Effect" to German production company Boll KG, the companies said on Tuesday.
"Fear Effect" is an action-adventure franchise featuring two heroines, Hana and Rain. The last game in the series came out about three years ago. A new installment was previewed at trade shows in 2002 but never released.
"I want to create an action film in the vein of 'Charlie's Angels' but portray its sexy heroines Hana and Rain in a much edgier fashion," Uwe Boll, head of Boll KG, said.
Boll KG's last game-based movie, an adaptation of Sega Corp.'s (Tokyo:7964.T - News) "House of the Dead," was released last October, grossing about $10.2 million at the U.S. box office on an estimated budget of $12 million.
"Alone in the Dark," another Boll game-based film derived from the Atari Inc. (NasdaqNM:ATAR - News) game, is set to be released this summer, and late last year the company licensed the rights to a film based on Majesco's "BloodRayne" franchise.
Eidos' most prominent franchise, "Tomb Raider," was turned into a film series starring actress Angelina Jolie.
While the first film did well, the second had a weak opening, and Paramount blamed the film's performance on bad reviews and sluggish sales for last summer's "Tomb Raider" game.
