  • ELSPA (Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association) announced the first tranche of high-level speakers for the conference programme at the industry-facing European Games Network trade show, taking place at London ExCeL 1st – 3rd September 2004. Gerhard Florin, senior VP and managing director European publishing at Electronic Arts has confirmed that he will be making the opening keynote address on day two of the event. The first day will be opened by a keynote looking forward to the next decade in interactive entertainment from the president of the US trade body ESA, Doug Lowenstein. Designed to present a broad range of topics covering all levels of the pan-European computer and video games business, the EGN conference programme will tackle key issues including a look into future trends, changing market demographics, creating compelling marketing campaigns in today's competitive market, adding value and other detailed sessions.   • We were informed that elkware, Europe's leading mobile phone game developer, is continuing its vigorous expansion plans with the opening of a UK office. The company, based in Germany and having opened a US office last year, has appointed Anglo-Nordic trade expert Jens Lauritzson as UK country manager. The move coincides with the company signing three major new licenses for the boy band phenomenon Blue and super-babes Pamela Anderson and Katie Price (Jordan), details on which will be officially announced in the next few weeks.
  • The Entertainment Software Charity (ESC) announced the names of those intrepid types from the computer and video games industry taking part in the sponsored climb of Kilimanjaro. The gallant group assembled in London for a final briefing and photo call at Climb headquarters in London last week. The group hopes to raise nearly £100,000 for the games industry charity. The ascent will take place in September 2004 and participants were asked to raise minimum individual sponsorship of £5000 to take part in the 10 day trek in Africa. Whilst two thirds of all money raised will go to the ESC the remaining third will be donated to the Kilimanjaro Village Education Project which aims to provide teaching assistance for and improve the physical state of primary schools in the Marangu area of Tanzania. The climbing team have come forward from all areas of the industry and include, in alphabetical order: Roger Bennett, Sean Dromgoole, Darren Falcus, Doron Garfunkel, John Holder, Ian Livingstone, Charles Lockhart., Dave Noble, Paul Patterson, Andy Payne, Mark Strachan, Kelly Sumner and Jeff Tawney. The event is being organised in association with Guerba Travel, acknowledged leaders in African overland travel for over 23 years.
