Who could not be fascinated by the appeal of the smallest continent and largest island of our planet? Australia's flora and fauna alone are a world apart. And even its transport industry has its own rules and facets which promise an element of surprise.
For instance, did you know that the Australian railroad network was not really completed until 1980, when the whole network was finally interconnected? This is why the significance of the railroad varies between the different parts of the country. While densely populated areas boast a rather well-developed railroad network, there are other parts that are hardly developed at all. At best, you'll find long trains stretching for almost a mile, carrying vast quantities of ore at minimum speed. Waiting times of up to 15 minutes at grade crossings are nothing out of the ordinary. Should you ever happen to come across such a train – stop! Whatever the obstacle at a grade crossing, these monsters won't brake.
Australia's railroads are designed mainly for freight transport. With the exception of suburban lines, passenger transport is of minor importance. This is why, even today, there are no real high-speed tracks, like there are in Europe or the USA.
Road trains are another typically Australian means of transport, well-known all over the world and no less impressive than the ore trains. These are real giants on the outback roads. With a length of over 50 meters, they have little in common with the trucks in use on our roads. In some areas these trucks are the main means of transport even today. In particular for tourists, overtaking these vehicles is a thrill that most people can well do without. In the case of ultra-long and heavy ore transporters with up to five trailers, it might not even be a bad idea to leave the road altogether when you hear them honking their horns in the distance. Or what would you think about the driver of the escort vehicle coolly remarking: "You'd better pull off the road if you don't want to be killed!".
Of course we have also included specific Australian industries. You can now transport ostrich eggs, kiwis, kangaroo meat or opals.
