Epic Games has released a patch for both the shareware and registered/retail versions of Jazz Jackrabbit 2. The patch (v1.23) fixes a number of problems from the previous versions as well as adding loads of new features to enhance your game playing experience, particularly in Internet play! Features include Internet server kicking & banning, a bad language filter and Clan support!
The patch upgrade users of Jazz Jackrabbit 2 shareware and registered to v1.23. It will upgrade users of v1.20, v1.21 and v1.22 to version 1.23. v1.23 (Released Patch Version) Removed new volume max @ 50%. Changed default to UseDirectSound=true (New galaxy works on most PC's, those who don't can turn it off, seems driver bugs with SB16 has been fixed/Unreal test bed). Fixed music always be reset to 100% when entering level, restarting game, etc. Command-line "-nosound" option didn't work with the new sound system, fixed. Minimized server now gives up TimeSlice and maxes out to 50 frames/sec, works better when multitasking. v1.22 (Gathering of Developers Retail Release Version) Repeating " captured the flag" messages. Fixed. TEAMplay/CLANplay: People can now select their own team when they join a game. Set to Default, this will choose even/odd client numbers (like 1.21 games) but you can now also select blue or red as the team. You will join the server as that team. Combined with kicking with this simple Clan based play can be done, in all game modes. Not shown for local-multiplayer games (non-network based) *NEW EVENT*: Trigger Zone. Thanks Dethman. When a player walks through this event, a switch is pulled. Destructable scenery can now also be reset back by having an OFF event. SWITCH=1 flips the current state. When a server stops, the message "server stopped'" is shown correctly now... Music Files: Files with other extensions such as S3M, XM or IT can now be played directly, no .J2B patched behind the name anymore (oops, thought we fixed this before). This makes the MOD2J2B utility for end-users obsolete, MOD2J2B is bad since it's also sound system version dependent, just include your normal original S3M/whatever files now. Fixed joystick key setup + tested with sidewinder. System waits for button after pressing a new on. Tested MS Sidewinder 2 software, works fine here. Loading wrong savegame type. Multiplayer vs. Single Player fixed. Fixed some problems with starting games through commandlines. Entering number of players (-PLAYER2) when lastplayed menu-interfaced game had another count of players. Now fixed. Added a file selector for local multiplayer games. Game now no longer defaults to the official Party Mode levels for split screen play. All key buffers cleared after playing a game. When you get a crate of powered-up homing missilles, you can sometimes get over 50 ammo. Fixed. Kicking: Type T, then kick or kick etc... The number is the number of the player that you want to kick off. The client of the player gets disconnected, so if the guy is playing with more players, they are all kicked off. Player is shown "Server Kicked You Off" message. Banning: (Use banlist.txt) Servers can see IP addresses of players (press F9 twice, only on server). The banlist.lst can contain names, which are substrings and which will be illegal. Names are A-Z only, numbers are not counted (so an entry like HENK or HENK01 or H2E2N2K will be the same as just HENK). Can contain IP addresses, with wildcards 192.168.*.* One new entry on each new line. Usage: T, BAN HENK or BAN 1 . The name and IP of the guy are added to the banlist.txt. User is shown "Server Banned You." message. Other players (1.22 clients) are shown: " was BANNED" or " was kicked off." Chat Filter: The Chat filter is clientside and takes input strings and does substring matches on them and replaces bad language with "---". "-NOFILTER" option for turning the filter off (it's client side only). Extended default file. New order info and readme texts. Server should now always send UDP packets from port 10052. Fixed bug in JCS where some mask files could crash with a General Protection Violation or Page Fault. New keys in JCS which let you scroll easily with Tab. Fixed bug on Non-P2 MMX based machines which didn't show an option for 16 bit colour in the Video pulldown menu in Windowed Mode. Fixed server passwording bug. Thanks HiDDeN. Fixed bug where completing a secret level like Gargoyles Lair caused the Area End of Level events to stop working. v1.21 (Released Patch Version) Added a Progress Meter for the Downloading screen. Fixed seeing two characters when finishing a level. If server has the flag, then minimizes the game the flag now returns to base. Bubbles now displayed when firing the Fire Shield underwater :) Fixed buttstomping frozen objects. Hover board mode disabled when entering water. When server is minimized, Server player disappears from game. Server players hidden from F9 Player List. Recorded new DEMO macros. Added new CTF map, Chemical Warfare. Fixed install scripts and version number errors. Fixed Player Chatting bug which sometimes caused the text string to be lost. Fixed client flooding servers. Wrong calculation of number of times to send packet, caused packets to be sent on each frame. Extended player-movement packets to contain player speeds: Better as calculated speeds from delta-positions. Better prediction. Tested multi player at approximately 50% forced packet loss situations on client-server communications. Still plays ok. Prediction is turned off when no packets are received from a player within a second. When a KILL message arrives, you will now DIE immediately. Weapons: When you have the max. available ammo, you can't pick up any more for that weapon. Health: When you have full energy, you can't pick up any more carrots. Optimized collision with several object-types. Capture the Flag messages: Fixed repeating messages. Fixed players of same team being able to kill each other. Internet Latency: Clients don't send many updates when they're standing still (optimization). Send-bandwidth ranges from 10kbaud when moving to 2kbaud when still. Optimized flag-status packet (sent less often, packed better, smaller packet) Client-side prediction. Server-side prediction. Non-local landscape collision detection: Optimized this detection (was CPU intensive). Fixed some overshooting into scenery problems. (Prediction related) Server update speed changed with the number of players that are active. When more players are active the other move-packets are sent over slower. Bullet packets optimized: byte smaller + dual/triple rockets send only one packet. added error distribution: new positions are not set directly but are interpolated between the predicted and the received position. This looks very much smoother. Version number changed to v1.21 (essential). Shareware version can now upload levels to registered versions. Shareware can't download content. Shareware version now has CRC checking to make sure you are playing the same level as the server. So that players cannot rename files and change levels for cheating. Shareware won't download info. v1.20b (Internal Release) New level masks implemented. Reduces the risk of players getting stuck in the scenery. Fixed the Power-up bug which sometimes caused the amount of bullets/rockets to be reduced to 25: You always get 25 rockets/bullets from a monitor, if it's upgrading or not (more logical). When loading a level, all old player structures are cleared (which fixes some of the problems when you had 2 players active, and loaded a 1 player file, the 2nd player wasn't cleared and stayed active. Fixed getting stuck in scenery when butt stomping on One way event areas. When you land "half" in the scenery on One way events, the game now moves you up to the correct height. (looks a bit weird). Added CRC in Shareware. v1.20a (Internal Release) Fixed the "pause" problem on Sidewinders and other joysticks. .j2i links from web link page now work in Registered and shareware. Command line enabled, you can start servers with: jazz2 -nosound - (capture, battle or treasure) -server -maxplayers -counts Makes it easy to start games using batch files. Server name and player information is read from registry. Set the server and player name up in the game first so registry entries exist, then use command line stuff. Removed dead bodies. Fixed some things in spanish language, rolled back and checked all characters. Default sound now set to: WINDOWSMM instead of DIRECTSOUND: DirectSound sound gives more problems (Windows 98 woes) Default sample rate is now set to 22050 khz. Fixed "Retrieving Serverlists" message not being shown. v1.20 (Initial Shareware Release Version)
