"Indie Game Developers: The Garage Bands of the 21st Century" In the past 30 years, through movements as disparate as garage rock and guerilla filmmaking, the 'independent scene' has become a vital part of the American artistic tradition. Today, more and more young adults are finding themselves hard at work on a brand new sort of home-brewed entertainment: video games. Thousands who grew up on video games are now dedicating their lives to creating them. Because the chances of getting your game distributed by a major publisher are about as likely as having Ben Affleck star in your script, these 'indie' game developers are turning to the internet. One such developer is Zero Sum Software founded by Mat Williams and CP McBee, a pair of young men united by their passion for video games. Shortly after meeting at a game company in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the two decided to forgo other opportunities in the industry to pursue their common dream of developing innovative games on their own terms. Far from the cliché image that is typically associated with the "hard-core gamer", Mat, a 26-year-old Harvard grad, grew up on a cattle ranch in Texas, while CP, the 25-year-old son of Grammy winning jazz bassist Cecil McBee, grew up in Harlem. As CP says: "I think most indie game developers are like us, regular people who've played video games their whole lives and have a burning desire to make their mark in the medium they love." Zero Sum Software's flagship title 'Prelude to Darkness', sets itself apart from the competition with its in-depth story line, 400 unique characters and multitude of intricate quests. 'Prelude to Darkness' is set for internet release in late August.
