PopTop Software and Gathering of Developers Release Railroad Tycoon II: The Second Century Expansion Pack
Railroad Tycoon II Expansion Pack Includes New Scenarios, Trains, Industries and Features
Dallas, TX, April 26, 1999 - Get ready to 'engineer' your way through booming and shattered economies, nuclear meltdown, and population explosions with the release of the Railroad Tycoon II: The Second Century expansion pack. Railroad Tycoon II: The Second Century is the expansion pack to award winning computer game developer PopTop's critically acclaimed blockbuster strategy-simulation game Railroad Tycoon II. Created by PopTop, the game takes railroad tycoons into the next era of railroading with new areas to develop and new industries to dominate. The pack was published by developer-driven computer and video game publisher Gathering of Developers and is available for .99.
"The expansion adds a lot of very high quality scenarios, plus lots of new features and graphics. This expansion is not 'more of the same' - it's a genuinely fresh set of challenges that I'm sure fans of the original will really love," said Phil Steinmeyer, PopTop Software's CEO and lead designer of Railroad Tycoon II. "We did the expansion in house, with the original development team, and spent a lot of time on it, because we wanted to provide a gaming experience that not just equals that of the original Railroad Tycoon II, but exceeds it in every important way."
Railroad Tycoon II: The Second Century focuses on the post-industrial years of 1939 through 2030. Gamers encounter world catastrophes such as World War II, the Cold War, and global warming, and must solve modern problems such as the increasing demand for mass transportation in major cities. The expansion pack features 15 stand-alone maps (multi-player and single player) and a campaign featuring 18 scenarios. Railroad Tycoon II: The Second Century features new trains including the French TGV bullet train, the Brennar 412, the Eurostar, and the German DB18-201 (a contemporary steam train), and new cars such as Metra passenger cars, troop transports and weapons flatbeds. Players are challenged to build new structures including weapons plants, army barracks, and a distillery.
Railroad Tycoon II: The Second Century features a new campaign containing 18 scenarios split into three chapters. The scenarios cover
:
World War II and Aftermath (1939-1950): Gamers help guide the Allies to victory in World War II by managing the British railroad system through the Blitz and by hauling supplies from Russia to the Western Front to hold off the German attack. After the war ends, gamers enter the Cold War phase and must build railroad systems to deliver critical supplies to West Berlin before Russia cuts the region off from the non-communist world.
The Modern Era (1950-2005): After the war, America’s economy and population booms. Players need to meet the transportation demands of the rising population and build a high-speed rail connecting Los Angeles and San Francisco. Across the Atlantic, gamers are challenged with managing the underwater Chunnel between England and France and reducing its debt. In addition, Railroad Tycoon II: The Second Century calls upon the player to build modern "Metra" (light rail) systems for mass transportation within the cities of Seattle and Munich.
The Future (2005-2030): In the millennium, the world powers come together and build a power station that feeds from the Earth's core. Unfortunately, a little “accident” at the plant leads to worldwide disaster-the polar ice caps melt causing massive floods around the globe. The United States turns into a watery wasteland and once-uninhibited areas, like Antarctica, become the new destinations of choice. Thus, a need for rail systems in these new hot spots arises.
PopTop incorporated changes to Railroad Tycoon II: The Second Century's interface to give players more control over laying tracks and building longer bridges that can span open bodies of water. New gameplay features include waypoints, shipping and storing cargo, and the addition of a status section to annual reports to inform players about their progress. Railroad Tycoon II: The Second Century also features a more powerful editor with dozens of new event scenarios, all new video footage, and a new soundtrack.
