INTRODUCTION
When I rolled my M-4 Sherman off the LST and onto the beach at Normandy, I thought I was commanding the finest armored fighting vehicle in the world. We had speed, maneuverability and reliability. We also had the ability to turn around repairs a lot faster, since so many of our boys had been neighborhood gas station grease-monkeys back home.
A lot of these factors were negated for both us and the Germans by the terrain and layout of the Normandy countryside. The whole place was divided up by thick hedgerows and sunken roads. We couldnt traverse our turrets on the sunken roads and the Germans had all the high roads and highways pre-sighted for their 88s. Our advantage came further inland on open ground where we could do our song and dance on fast maneuvering. And then, there was WP. Oh, how we did love our white phosphorous! The stuff burned like a piece of hell and nothing could put it out. That was the most effective round we could fire from our 76, let me tell you.
Lt. George Meyer, 2nd Armored Div.
