The Quickie Intro
Controls
Most things in Trailer Park Tycoon are controlled by the mouse. Click the left-mouse button to do or select things.
Click the right mouse button to cancel an action.
View
There are two ways to look at things in Trailer Park Tycoon: top down and ground level.
The top-down view gives you a good look at the layout of your park. Ground level is good for some
types of control (described below) and is just plain prettier. You can switch between views by
left-clicking the little man/camera icon by the mini-map.
Scrolling and Zoom
In either view you can move the camera around using the arrow keys. You can also move by putting the
mouse pointer at the edge of the screen. In both views you can zoom the view in and out by using
the + and - keys. If you’ve got a fancy wheeled mouse, you can zoom in and out that way too.
Game Play
Each scenario you play will begin with a pop-up window, telling you what you need to do to win.
You may need to make a certain amount of money, get your park into a certain condition, or do a combination
of these things in a limited amount of time. Whatever the goal, you are going need to build a park with trailers,
amenities and ornaments to attract rent-paying residents.
You start with an empty park. There are lots marked with a 'T' for trailers and an 'A' for amenities.
You can only put a trailer in the 'T' lot, and you guessed it, only amenities in the 'A' lots.
To see what’s available, click on Amenities, Trailers or Ornaments. Clicking on one of the pictures in the
mailboxes will bring up an information window with stuff like cost, rent and the traits the object has
(trashy/flashy, cool/old school). To purchase and place the object in the park, left-click the right
picture and move the ghosted image to the correct place on the map. Click again and the object will appear,
costing you money.
Trailers are the first things you should put down. Each trailer has a max rent and a pair of traits.
All of these numbers will affect what kind of resident will want to move in to the trailer. You can tell
what potential residents like by looking at the hint sliders above the info window. Try to choose a trailer
with a trashy/flashy or cool/old school values that are similar to the slider values. Otherwise, you’ll
have a dang hard time of gettin’ residents to move in!
Once you have a trailer down, residents will drive up to your park sign and take a gander. It’s good to have
several trailers ready right away so you can start earning’ some of your cash back. Remember, the more trailers
you have, the more money you can make.
Another thing to keep in mind is that some trailers can be upgraded. A little hammer on the trailer window
will let you make the trailer bigger and better. This is good if your resident changes his mind or if you want to
charge more rent. Don’t be shy about keeping’ your park up to date!
But it ain’t all about getting residents to move in. Now you’ve got to keep ‘em happy! Several things are
going to affect a resident’s happiness: the amount of rent, the trailer’s trait values and a resident’s needs.
You can check out a resident’s current happiness by clicking on them. A stoplight-colored thought bubble will show up.
Green is happy, yellow is kinda-unhappy, red is angry and flashing red is a problem!
Rent
You can control rent by clicking on a trailer. You’ll see the current rent there. You can push the rent up or
down by clicking on the little arrows. But be sure to check how much a resident will pay! Click on the R/T button
to switch between the trailer and the resident who lives there. Match the amounts if you can. Even better, charge
less. Being charged less rent makes anyone happy!
Wants
It’s important that a resident lives in a place he likes. The trashy/flashy and cool/old school traits describe
what a resident wants. When you click on a trailer, a grid pops up to show you the area that will affect a
trailer’s traits. Any object that sits in that grid, including other trailers, will affect these traits. Exceeding a
resident's wants will make the resident happier. This is important because you can use this extra happiness to offset
unhappiness created by a higher rent. Exceed a resident's wants and you'll be able to charge them more. This is
a great strategy to help you win the game.
Ornaments are the best way to change these traits. By carefully placing ornaments in a trailer’s grid, you can
customize a trailer to a resident’s wants. But be careful, trailer grids can overlap. What’s good for one resident
may be bad for another. Another thing, residents change their minds from time to time. So watch ‘em close and keep
their trailers up to date.
Needs
Unfortunately, resident’s don’t just pay you rent. They have needs. Sometimes they get hungry, want to do laundry
or look for something fun to do. Amenities satisfy these needs.
You can see what a resident needs by clicking on the resident and looking at the icon. Look for the amenity that
matches that icon and place it in the park. You get money from the residents when they satisfy their needs.
Just like rent, the amount you charge for an amenity will affect resident happiness.
Demolish
Sometimes you just gotta get rid of something in you park. At any time, you can click on the demolish tab.
This changes your mouse to demolish mode. Click on anything in the park to get rid of it.
