3. Troubleshooting
DirectX Problems:
DirectX® 8.1b or later must be installed on your computer before you can play Restaurant Empire. You can install DirectX 8.1b provided with the Restaurant Empire CD, or you can download the software from Microsoft Windows Update at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
If you encounter video or sound problems when using DirectX, go to http://support.microsoft.com/support/directx/ for the latest troubleshooting information.
You should also obtain the latest DirectX-compatible drivers from your video or sound card manufacturer.
Windows 2000 Service Pack:
If you have problems running Restaurant Empire on Windows 2000 and have already updated your video drivers, try downloading the Windows 2000 Service Pack version 2 or later and install it on your machine.
Crashes and Lock-Ups:
When Restaurant Empire starts, mouse cursor disappears and computer locks-up.
Your installed audio card drivers may not be compatible with DirectX. Please obtain a DirectX 8.x or higher-compatible driver from your sound card manufacturer.
The Installer keeps stalling after a certain percentage has completed.
Your hard drive could be out of space. Please free up additional space by removing unwanted programs and reinstall Restaurant Empire.
Files are possibly being copied to a corrupted area of your hard drive. If this is the case, run the scandisk program and use the Thorough option. After scandisk finishes and informs you that your drive is free of errors, try installing Restaurant Empire again.
There may be dirt or fingerprints on the CD-ROM disc itself. Examine the bottom of the disc and clean it carefully using a soft, lint-free cloth by wiping from the center of the disc (near the hole) towards the outer edge in a straight line.
Restaurant Empire crashes to the desktop with no error messages.
- Make sure the reading surface of the CD-ROM is clean (check for scratches and smudges).
- Make sure the game has been installed properly.
- Make sure DirectX 8.1b has been installed properly.
- Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video and sound card, and that they are DirectX 8.x-compatible - or higher.
- Make sure Virtual Memory is enabled on your system.
- Make sure you have run Scandisk and that no errors are reported.
- Run Disk Defragmenter.
- Clean out any old temp (.TMP) files from the C:WINDOWSTEMP or C:WINxTEMP directory on your hard drive (you may use Windows Explorer to do this).
- Make sure you do not have any resident anti-virus or third-party Windows memory management utilities running prior to playing Restaurant Empire.
- Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the game.
- Try exiting the game, rebooting your machine, and re-entering the game.
Note that if your system crashes to the desktop while playing Restaurant Empire, you should reboot your computer before starting a new session. Otherwise, DirectDraw or DirectSound may be in a locked state, and the game will be unable to use your video or sound hardware.
Video Problems:
If you are experiencing problems with your display, difficulties launching the game, or experiencing crashes to the desktop, you may need to make some changes to the Display Settings. Restaurant Empire is designed to run at 32bit color by default.
To adjust the Color Display Settings, please follow these steps:
1) Click on 'Start' in the Start Menu.
2) Click on 'Settings'.
3) Click on 'Control Panel'.
4) When the Control panel window comes up, double-click on the 'Display' Icon
and click on the 'Settings' tab.
To adjust the Color:
1) Click on the down arrow at the end of the "Colors" field
2) Select the appropriate setting (in most cases 32 bit High Color)
3) Click on 'Apply' (located at the lower right area of the window).
4) A message will appear: "Windows has adjusted your color display. Do you want to keep this setting?"... Select 'YES', then the 'OK' button
Video card and sound card manufacturers often have updated drivers which may improve performance and stability. Make sure your drivers are up-to-date. Depending on what video cards you use, you may obtain newer drivers from the following web sites:
http://www.nvidia.com
http://www.ati.com
http://www.matrox.com
http://www.voodoofiles.com/
For nVidia users (TNT2, GeForce 256, GeForce2, GeForce3, GeForce4 etc.) We recommend using Detonator 30.82 instead of 40.78.
Restaurant Empire does not support Voodoo2 cards or below.
Motherboard Chipset:
If you continue to encounter performance-related problems and have already ensured that your system is DirectX 8.1b-compatible, you should check for the availability of updated motherboard chipset drivers with your system manufacturer. Updating motherboard drivers usually enhances the performance and functionality of your controllers. Please consult with your system manufacturer for assistance or your motherboard manual for driver updates and possible solutions.
CDROM/DVD-ROM Problems:
Restaurant Empire requires at least a Quad-Speed (4x) CD-ROM drive with 32-bit Windows 98/2000/XP drivers.
If you receive a "xxxxxx.xxx not found" error message when installing or running Restaurant Empire, this error message is usually attributed to the CD-ROM drive using MS-DOS (16 bit) drivers instead of Windows (32 bit) drivers. To verify that this is the cause of yout problems, open the Control Panel by either clicking on the My Computer icon or clicking on the Start button > Settings > Control Panel).
Once you are in the Control Panel window, click on the System icon, then the Performance tab. You will see a summary of your computer's performance status. One line will read "File System: 32-bit" and the last line should mention that "Your system is configured for optimal performance."
If you see a message saying "Drive X is using MS-DOS compatibility mode," then contact your system vendor to obtain and install 32-bit drivers for your CD-ROM drive.
Sound Problems:
If you experience skips while listening to the speeches in the game, you should first check if you have the latest sound drivers installed in your system. Although possible, we do not recommend using your motherboard's on-board sound chip to play sound.
