Eidos Interactive Unleashes Animal Anarchy with Whiplash New Character-Based Action Game from Crystal Dynamics Shatters the Mold
SAN FRANCISCO, May 9 - Eidos Interactive (Nasdaq: EIDSY - News), one of the world's leading publishers and developers of entertainment software, today announced the development of Whiplash for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and Xbox® video game system from Microsoft. Whiplash features a shackled animal duo on a mission to sabotage an animal product-testing corporation.
Providing an innovative approach to the character-based action genre, Whiplash combines a unique "chain" gameplay mechanic with in-depth enemy and environment interaction, rich combat and slapstick humor. The result is an engaging game where player choice triggers an unscripted chain of chaotic, humorous events.
"Today's sophisticated gamers expect more from character-based games than arbitrary collecting and monotonous platform jumping. Our goal is to re-define this genre by adding relevancy and depth to the gameplay while still remaining highly accessible," said Noah Hughes, Lead Designer, Crystal Dynamics.
Whiplash is set in a high-tech product testing facility where questionable experiments are conducted on animals. The game stars two animal fugitives, Spanx and Redmond, who find themselves chained together and on the run to escape the lab. As Spanx, the player uses Redmond as their weapon to not only escape, but also to free other enslaved animals and bankrupt the corporation by destroying the property.
For example, Spanx uses Redmond to chain whip attackers, as a grappling hook to swing over hazards, or to clog a toilet creating a foul flood to ward off enemies. Working against the twosome are a multitude of baddies ranging from ruthless scientists and unsanitary surgeons, to crooked rent-a-cops and the evil CEO.
"Crystal Dynamics has always been an internal hotbed of innovative ideas and creativity," says Rob Dyer, President, Eidos Interactive. "Eidos firmly believes Whiplash will quench gamers' thirst for fresh, original gameplay. The game's focus on highly interactive environments, deep combat, mass destruction, and satirical humor along with the ultimate goal of 'bringing down the man' will appeal to gamers of all ages."
Whiplash is scheduled for a worldwide release this Fall.
