According to
report from EDGE Online, Lawrence Kasanoff, producer of the original Mortal Kombat film from 1995, is trying to block the sale of the Mortal Kombat IP to Warner Bros. Interactive. The argument is that Lawrence himself owns several exclusive rights to the series, including the creation of film and television based off of the property. In addition, he claims to hold copyright over certain characters that he turned into "recognizable names".
The amusing thing here is that, in order to create a film, the series would have had to have been a success to begin with. What made Mortal Kombat a success wasn't the fact that it was a film, but that it was so controversial. The only major thing that the Mortal Kombat film did was create the first film based on a video game that wasn't bad. Not great, but not bad.
This is all backlash to the recent $33 Million USD bid that Warner Bros. put out for Midway's Mortal Kombat IP, in addition to a few other assets of the bankrupt company.
