Horror finds a new home...
Silent Hill 3 comes to PC in enhanced conversion of Konami's acclaimed chiller
The terror continues in October as Konami of Europe releases an enhanced conversion of Silent Hill 3, the acclaimed third title in Konami's best-selling horror series for PC.
Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo, the team behind the best-selling PlayStation 2 game, has produced the PC game, with series creator and producer Akira Yamaoka working to ensure the conversion benefits from the improved capabilities offered by PC hardware. This will include an aesthetic overhaul, with the PC version of Silent Hill 3 enjoying considerably higher resolution graphics than the PlayStation 2 game. In another key addition to the game, players will also be able to save the game at any point during play, as opposed to using the red save points found in the console version.
Silent Hill 3 is the largest, most ambitious, and gripping Silent Hill title to date, upping the scares and the drawing the player into its mix of puzzles and action via a twisting plot. The game also moves away from the mist-shrouded streets of the first two games, and Silent Hill 3 focuses instead on Heather, a young girl who shares a link with the town. Heather, a carefree teenager, is on a trip to her local shopping centre when her life is turned upside down. As she prepares to leave, the shops and brightly lit walkways are transformed into a dark, brooding place where eerie noises echo around the empty corridors and where grotesque, misshapen creatures can be glimpsed fleetingly amidst the shadows.
Trapped in this inhospitable world, Heather is forced to fight for her life. Grotesque apparitions and lumpen shapes shadow her every move, while an army of grotesque creatures lurk in dark corners and rooms. Armed with whatever she can find – including pistols, a sub-machine gun and a piece of steel pipe – Heather must fend off their advances while solving the mysteries that will gradually piece together why she is trapped in this hellish, insane world.
Silent Hill 3 represents a huge advance for the groundbreaking horror series. The incredibly high resolution and incredible aesthetic detail of the PC game brings the game's dark corridors and blood stained rooms to life. Likewise, the unusual camera angles, eerie sound effects and Yamaoka-san's haunting musical stings ensure the player is kept in a permanent state of trepidation.
The game's horrific mutated adversaries are also of note, with the brief glimpses seen as the game progresses compounded when they are seen in all their horrific, flesh-eating glory. Together, these elements create a truly engrossing and unsettling experience, with Silent Hill 3 constantly surprising the player with innovative gameplay and plot twists.
Silent Hill 3 will be released for PC DVD-ROM in October, 2003.
