Easily one of the best add-on packs to emerge on the PC in recent memory, Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour adds not just new levels to the hit strategy game, but a whole new game mode too. So let's start with that. The idea is that you go head-to-head against one of nine enemy generals, each of whom has a tactic they specialise in and some manner of insult to hurl in your direction. Then you need to factor in that you're playing on their ground and that they will have a better position in their territory than you. That established, you get a finite amount of time to get your base built before they start attacking. It's relentless stuff and all the more enjoyable for it. This whole mode justifies the price of the expansion pack alone. But you do get a lot more for your money. There are new single-player missions, a lot more multi-player maps, new weapons to get your paws on and an improved visual style. Also, there's a hardened difficulty level, which does cause frustration in the early stages, but is far from insurmountable. Perhaps it goes without saying that this is a good buy for those who bought Command & Conquer: Generals. However, the effort, enhancements and improvements you get make it pretty much unmissable. Let's hope that more expansion packs follow the standard set out here. --Simon Brew
